An internship can be more than a mere résumé booster; a strong internship program delivers powerful, transformative experiences for both interns and companies. When structured thoughtfully, internships—especially in creative fields—create symbiotic relationships, offering new graduates and current college students alike real-world exposure while providing employers with fresh perspectives and potential future hires.
In the agency world, in particular, internships are often strategic initiatives, building pathways for job seekers to become skilled professionals and pipelines for companies to enjoy direct access to top talent. Here, 14 members of Forbes Agency Council discuss how their agencies structure their summer internship programs to foster talent, creativity and mutual growth. Each approach outlined below highlights a unique way to engage interns in meaningful, career-building work.
1. Strategic Pitch Development
Our summer interns will track competitor news daily and develop strategic counter-pitches—then present their ideas to their manager for training, feedback and creativity sharpening. It’s a real-world drill that boosts speed, confidence and critical thinking. This hands-on approach has helped us spot top talent early, many of whom we’ve hired into full-time roles post-program. – Monique Tatum, BPM-PR Firm (Beautiful Planning Marketing & PR)
2. Client Project Support And Cultural Enrichment
Our junior associates support client projects, streamline operations and enrich our culture. By working on projects like our annual impact report, they learn and showcase how business can be a force for good. Beyond professional experience, our program is a next-generation leadership opportunity that builds lasting connections, inspires community impact and fosters personal growth. – Anne St. Peter
3. UX Research And Concept Design
Our interns will help with user experience research and early-stage concept design, giving them real project exposure. We leverage internships as a way to mentor future talent while gaining fresh perspectives from Gen-Z. Many of our past interns joined us full time and still work with us, making the program a key part of building a strong, connected team over time. – Goran Paun, ArtVersion
4. Real Cross-Department Project Involvement
Our interns are deeply involved in formative research, content ideation, drafting and editing—touching real projects, not just shadowing. We embed them across departments so they experience agency life holistically. This approach sharpens their skills and gives us a fresh lens on our work, often inspiring updates to our processes and fueling future hires. – Christy Saia-Owenby
5. AI-Powered Customer Research
Our interns will use AI for customer research, combining it with their own perspectives to better understand how Gen-Z and Gen Alpha are reshaping consumer behavior and media habits. Their insights, combined with data, will guide our future brand strategies. We recruit paid interns by invitation only to ensure our interests mutually align. This approach has been very effective for us. – Fernando Beltran
6. Customer Analytics And Content Creation
Interns will lead a project on customer analytics by creating tailored content that captures genuine consumer insights. Their independent work offers hands-on learning and infuses fresh perspectives into our hiring process. This enhances our ability to recruit talented, adaptable team members. – Vaibhav Kakkar
7. Creating Data-Driven Content Strategies
This summer, our interns will focus on creating data-driven content strategies for clients, helping us refine messaging for specific audiences. By involving interns in hands-on projects, we gain fresh perspectives while nurturing talent for future roles. This program has significantly strengthened our recruiting efforts, leading to a pipeline of skilled, passionate candidates. – Robert Nikic, Why Unified
8. AI-Driven Search Visibility Analysis
This summer, our interns will focus on analyzing how brands are gaining visibility across AI-driven platforms like Google’s Search Generative Experience, ChatGPT and others. They’ll research what types of content are surfaced, analyze prompts and test strategies to improve brand presence. This analysis supports our strategic planning and gives interns real-world exposure to the next evolution of search visibility. – Ajay Prasad, GMR Web Team
9. Gaining Immersive Campaign Experience
We don’t believe in “intern busywork.” Our interns get hands-on experience supporting real client campaigns—from competitive research to social content planning to campaign reporting. It’s about immersion. And the impact has been huge: Some of our best full-time hires started as interns. It gives us a chance to find emerging talent and gives them a chance to see if agency life is for them. – Jacquelyn LaMar Berney
10. Content Research And Outreach
Our summer interns assist with content research and outreach support, helping us out with real client projects while learning practical skills. Internships have been a strong recruiting tool—many former interns have joined us full time, already trained in our workflow and culture. – Boris Dzhingarov
11. Cultural Immersion And Skill-Building
We treat internships as proving grounds—part learning lab, part culture immersion. Interns contribute to client work, internal initiatives and agency-wide insight-sharing. It’s a fast track for skill-building and chemistry checks. Our “trial by fire” approach yields greater intern satisfaction, sharper hires, increased retention and talent wired for success. Opportunity is theirs for the taking. – Shanna Apitz
12. Experimental Projects With AI
The best internships involve a degree of experimentation. Interns should be used to move the agency forward. For example, we’ll use an intern to help us test different ways that AI can help us grow the agency and win new clients this summer. It could be a hugely valuable project, and interns are ideal, as they’re not locked in to the way the agency “has always done things.” – Mike Maynard, Napier Partnership Limited
13. Social Media Content Creation
Our interns engage in ideation and execution of organic social media content while they learn about the complexity of social media ad buying. We believe in nurturing interns with real-world experience that they can use in other agencies—or perhaps in our own agency, as we regularly promote interns to full-time roles on our team once their internship periods are complete. – Bernard May
14. Offering Fresh Perspectives To Spark Innovation
Internships offer a valuable opportunity to support hardworking, ambitious students while also benefiting employers. Interns bring fresh energy and unique perspectives to real-world challenges, often approaching problems in creative ways that can spark innovation and help move projects forward. – Jessica Hawthorne-Castro
